Discernment is one of the most important skills we can learn, yet it’s often misunderstood. Many people confuse it with judgment, but discernment is different. Judgment puts down other people and clouds our perspective with negativity. However, discrimination is about clarity, seeing other people, situations, and relationships for what they truly are. Without discernment, we risk giving our trust, energy, and time to people who do not have our best interests at heart.
There are three key areas of life where discernment is necessary.
- Friendships-The people we confide in and trust with our lives should be chosen wisely.
- Romantic relationships-When we open our hearts and lives to someone, we need to know their character, values, and intentions,
- Business partnerships-Shared ethics, lifestyle, and reliability matter because their choices affect the success of everyone involved.
Discernment is not about criticizing or condemning. It is about observing, gathering details, and recognizing patterns that reveal the truth. Judgement is reactionary, discernment is reflective. Judgment narrows our way of thinking; discernment expands it.

One of the most difficult parts of discernment is noticing when things don’t add up. Sometimes the truth is hidden behind excuses or lies. This can be especially challenging when someone is not honest with themselves. It is important to watch for inconsistencies when things don’t make sense. We need to be mindful of gossip. Those who are talking about others are usually talking about you. Take time to notice the fake sacrifices. This manipulative tactic is designed to keep you feeling guilty and indebted.
Discernment requires a clear mind, free of drugs and alcohol. These things can cloud judgment and distort perception. Clarity is a lifestyle, not just a momentary choice. To see things as they really are, we need to stay grounded and present. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Discrimination often comes down to actions over words. Someone who truly cares will show it. If they are only playing a role, they will eventually reveal their true motives through behavior. If a person lies to others, they will likely lie to you, too, sooner or later.

Discernment is a necessity. It keeps us from falling into illusions, manipulations, or one-sided relationships. It allows us to see past the masks people wear and recognize their true character.       Â
