J.R.’s Tip of the week: How to evaluate a networking event? The most important element? Is there an environment of giving and sharing? Does the group act from the principal of “Give to Get”? In not, be careful.

If you have to jump through to many hoops, be careful. Example: Attend 7 times, hold 7 individual meetings, bring 7 guest, … this could be a red flag that the networking sponsors are more into getting than giving.

Look for mutual respect and examples of how business is done. If there are good, value based business relationships created, then you have found a good group to network with.

J.R.’s Perspectives Pulse Tip of the week: Prepare before you go: What to say about how your business and what you’re looking for.

For example, I might say something about a new project and some help I’m looking for. If I was a banker, I might say something about a new home mortgage product we just released and I’m looking to connect with residential realtors.

Or, if I’m a business broker, I might talk about the number of baby boomers who are maturing and how they are looking to sell their business and I’m looking to connect with people who have left corporate America and are looking for a business venture.

I’m not suggesting you to be slick or over prepared but I am suggesting that if you are “on purpose” you

1. Learning from Iraq with Stuart Bowen Tuesday July 16th

Could the creation of a single post-war office solve diplomatic and practical issues before they happen in war-torn nations? Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction Stuart Bowen believes such an office is the answer to many nation re-building problems.

Bowen believes that office would provide careful monitoring and leadership in order to eliminate duplicated efforts and inspire efficiency with the added advantage of bolstering America’s diplomatic image in a region.

Current conflicts, such as the Syrian situation, would be prime beneficiaries of the strengthened system of careful rebuilding.
